Education Apostolate
The beginning of the MSA Educational system was laid by Bishop Fortunatus Henri Caumont in 1919 in the city of Ajmer for the education of girls. Being a man of vision and foresight he realized the extreme backwardness and illiteracy of the people of Rajputana. Social customs down the ages for protective reasons had confined women behind the purdah system and they were deprived of education.
Bishop Caumont with the help of his Sister Mother Mary Matilda on 16th May 1919 started the first Sophia School at Ajmer to cater , specially to the Rajput girls who were in strict purdah system. This school was known as Purdah school for quite a long time.
The name ‘Sophia’ meant ‘Wisdom’. Sophia is expected to give Wisdom that comes from God to little ones through Gospel values.
Mother Mary Matilda was honoured with the title of the first Lady in the cause of Women’s Education by the Education department. In 1926 Mother Mary Matilda was made Inspectress of Government Schools in Ajmer Merwara and encouraged the local people to work for the education of the Girl Child. She was also made the Girl Guide Commissioner of Ajmer.
